USC’s Department of Public Safety recorded 17 home-burglary reports around University Park in the first eight weeks after fall classes began in 2026, compared with 10 over the equivalent period in 2025, a Hello, Trojan review of DPS logs found.
That’s 7 more reports. The records do not explain why the count increased.

DPS described 2 of those incidents in public alerts: people entered homes while residents were inside. On September 24, a resident was asleep when someone entered a home on the 600 block through an unlocked rear door and took property, DPS said. On September 30, someone entered a home on the 900 block through an unlocked front door and took property while the resident was home, according to an October 1 alert.
For housemates, DPS’s prevention advice offers a simple reminder: lock doors and windows even when someone is home, and don’t prop shared entrances open.
About the data
Counts cover distinct DPS case reports listing residential burglary, including burglaries while someone was home. Attempts are excluded. The comparison covers August 25–October 19, 2025, and August 24–October 18, 2026: 56 days each. The map runs through October 19, 2026; the additional day did not change the total. Reports may involve the same home.
